Desert or Dessert?
Comic updates and a wizard
I walk the desert hoping for a moment of peace and quiet. Instead, the clouds attack me with rain, and I no longer feel the love from the spry cacti posted up throughout the sea of tan. A golden texture crumbles under my feet every time I step forward, and when I retrace my steps, I tangle on a wiry web of dry bush. A fire in the sky calls to me. It gives my face and neck a tomato-red love tap. Maybe the sun loves me. Maybe I should accept and nurture the blinding light that is locked and loaded like a tank cannon. Stare down the barrel. Make it hurt. I see a drop of water on a slab of green snuggled next to a decent sized rock. It’s the perfect scene to paint…
Always a dollar short.
Books Are Boomin’
Exciting times for my new project, Eclosion. I have just received the proof version of the book. So far, I love it. I was nervous going into this print run because I decided on the magazine-sized, saddle-stitch format. The book feels great. No margin errors or anything that I immediately notice. I’m going to sit on it for a few days, and I’ll have some of my peers review it as well. I have a week or two before I need to pull the trigger on the full print run, so I’m going to make sure that everything is as good as it can be.
On The World Is a Funny Page #4, I’m in full-on pencil mode now. Typically, I switch between pencil and ink in five-page chunks, but I really want to line out all of the pencils first, then tackle all the ink in one go. I have a big, fun scene coming up in a few pages. Crazy excited about it.
I’m working on a one-page comic for a really cool anthology submission as well. I love doing one-pagers. They flex a different storytelling muscle. This one is a nine panel page. I’m taking it slowly as its not due for a few months, but I’m having lots of fun with it. It’s all black and white, so I’m trying to be creative with various textures.
I’ve also been asked to be a speaker at a comic book making class for a local college. I’m very thankful for the opportunity. I’ll be making some sort of outline for the presentation over the next few weeks so that I don’t look like a total buffoon in front of the students. No promises!
HAAARK!
Here’s a process video for a The Lighthouse drawing that I did last weekend. I love how weird this movie is. Black and white, non-standard aspect ratio, creepy and extremely wacky at times. It’s unhinged. It’s my favorite Robert Eggers flick. I’m due for a rewatch and maybe a write-up. Willem Dafoe is a wizard.
Short and hopefully sweet. Until next time!
Thanks for your time,
Nico

The new book looks fantastic. Really love that cover image. I wanted to see The Lighthouse when it came out, but never did. Maybe this is a sign to make time for that film.
I LOVE that cover. Being that I am from Los Angeles, I hope you will be selling that book online. Also, Eggers' Nosferatu is so beautiful.
