Look Out for Bears
Big Bend, doodles, and a magician
My trip to Big Bend National Park was fantastic. It was great being in a remote location where the night sky was littered with stars. The sheer number of interesting plants and cacti is something that is truly missed living in the city. Oh, and the land critters at Big Bend are much more exotic than the Texas sized cockroaches that I see running the streets of Houston. I couldn’t help but to be inspired by all the wonderful views and managed to do some sketching and painting throughout the trail hikes. Here’s a few sketches:
Far West, Texas was a fun time and taking a small break from comics put tons of new ideas in my head. I can’t wait to put them to paper.
On another note, I was accepted into the Houston Zine Fest coming up this November. I’m excited for it. I have a handful of mini comics (new and old) that I’m going to assemble for the show, and my buddy Justin will be doing the same. I’m looking forward to experiencing the indie DIY culture and being in the middle of a majorly artistic bubble. I’ll post more about it when the event approaches, but if you’re in Houston on November 12th, come check us out.
October is also known as Inktober for the art community and I've been contributing some sketch cards according to the prompts. It’s a fun event but, man, it’s time consuming. I haven’t been able to keep up with the everyday prompt, but come check out the drawings on my Instagram @nico_writes if you’re at all interested.
I’ll leave you with this sketch card of Alan Moore, trailblazing comic book writer turned real life magician, and a new article that discusses his outlook on comics and movies. Read it or he will come looking for you.
Thanks for your time,
Nico
