Murder & Mice
A quick update and recs
This week and last have been super busy. I’m still working on content for the aforementioned publisher, and I’ve also picked up another illustration gig that has been very fun but pretty time consuming. I’m eager to talk about these things and will as soon as I get the greenlight to do so. It’s kind of weird when you’re working on a handful of cool things but you can’t really show and talk about it with others. As they say, comic book making is a lonely profession. Well, at least the puppy listens.
Just a few recommendations in this newsletter. I’ll be out of town next week traveling West Texas and checking out Big Bend National Park, so I’ll catch up with everyone soon.
With House of Dragons and Rings of Power dominating the streaming headlines, there’s a delightful fantasy comic called MouseGuard that you should be reading. In MouseGuard, you follow a group of mice charged with being the knightly neighborhood watch for their townsfolk. Creator David Peterson builds such a wonderful, lived-in world that is sure to capture your imagination. Kids will love it, too.
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez shine in Only Murders in the Building, Hulu’s mystery series that’s part whodunnit, part buddy comedy. My girlfriend and I had such a great time watching this show week to week. We laughed a lot and enjoyed construing murderer theories as clues poured in. Only Murders is fun, easy watching with a clever script and a total recommend to anyone with a pulse. Season two just wrapped up and I already can’t wait for the next.
Season one of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal was simply incredible. The artistry within this show was jaw-dropping. Now that season two has finished, and upon that final episode, I am speechless. This show is a masterpiece. I really cannot describe Primal in words because nothing will live up to my experience of watching it. All I can say is that Primal is the best show on TV, and the best show that I’ve seen years. Genndy is a master of animation. I’d love to do a deep dive on his work and discuss how things like Dexter’s Lab, Samurai Jack, and Primal have been inspiring me for decades. Watch. This. Show.
Have a good week and read some comics.
Thanks for your time,
Nico
